"The loneliness up there was overwhelming. We were two small humans
lost in the wide and wild space between Shisha Pangma and the sky." On
Facebook, David Goettler recalls this timeless moment. The day when he and
his Italian friend Hervé Barmasse climbed the 14th highest peak in the world:
the 8,013 meters of Shisha Pangma in Tibet. It took them just 13 hours,
equipped with a small tent and one sleeping bag to share, to run up the 2,200
meters separating them from the base of the Southface to the summit. A fast,
light and efficient ascent for the Italian-German pairing, their speed dictated
by a brief weather window of 24 hours in which to complete the feat. At the
top, a loving thought for Ueli Steck, the Swiss mountaineer who has joined
the heavens just above them. A year earlier, he had been the rope partner
of Goettler as they attacked the same summit. For Goettler, the expedition
seems to bring a sense of closure. For Barmasse, it was his first 8,000. A
timeless moment for two friends, now bonded by memories and emotions
imprinted at more than 8,000 meters.

Facebook, David Goettler revenait sur ce moment hors du temps. Le jour où, lui
et son ami Italien, Hervé Barmasse, ont conquis le 14ème sommet le plus haut
du monde : le Shisha Pangma tibétain et ses 8013 mètres d’altitude. Il leur aura
fallu 13 heures, muni d’une petite tente et d’un duvet pour deux, pour parcourir
les 2 200 mètres de dénivelé qui les séparaient du sommet depuis le pied de la
face Sud. Une ascension rapide, légère et efficace pour le duo italo-germanique
qui disposait d’un court créneau météorologique de 24 heures pour réaliser
cette performance. Au sommet, une tendre pensée pour Ueli Steck, l’alpiniste
Suisse parti rejoindre les cieux un peu plus haut encore. Ce dernier avait été,
un an auparavant, le compagnon de cordée de Goettler à l’assaut de ce même
sommet. Pour Goettler, la boucle semble bouclée. Barmasse, lui, réalisait là
son premier 8 000. Un moment hors du temps pour deux amis désormais
unis par un souvenir et des émotions gravés à plus de 8000 mètres.
