beautiful and hostile in equal measure and that can't be

conquered by brute force... On 6 February 2016, 25 years

after it was first opened, Inès Papert reached the summit

via a route that has only been climbed four times before.

Climbing in Patagonia can quickly get tricky because of the

ruthless weather. The aptly named "Riders on the Storm"

is an exceptional and steep line of 1,300 m. Demanding

and varied, it goes from highly exposed sections to gaping

fissures bristling with ice. To climb it, Inès had to use her

intelligence and think outside the box: like getting out of

one pitch with crampons on one foot and a climbing shoe

on the other. Two ice axes in the frozen fissure acted as her

protection. Trademark "Papert" or "subtlety is strength"!

Her hands covered with blood, Mayan Smith-Gobat, who

was climbing with her, conquered two tough aid pitches.

Between them, they opened never previously climbed

sections, finding a highly daring variant of this already

unforgiving route. A risky business achieved with superb

finesse.

première, Inès Papert en atteignait le sommet, par une

voie gravie seulement quatre fois auparavant. L’escalade

en Patagonie s'avère vite délicate : la faute à une météo

implacable. La bien-nommée "Riders in the storm" est

une ligne exceptionnelle et raide de 1300 m. Exigeante et

variée, elle va de pas très exposés en fissures béantes

gorgées de glace. Pour en venir à bout, Inès a dû user de

son intelligence et dégainer les idées : comme sortir une

longueur avec, à un pied, des crampons et, à l'autre, un

chausson d’escalade. Deux piolets dans la fissure glacée

faisant office de protection. La marque de fabrique "Papert"

ou "la finesse faite force" ! Les mains baignées de sang,

Mayan Smith-Gobat, qui l'accompagnait, a terrassé pour sa

part deux coriaces longueurs d'artif. À elles deux, elles ont

libéré des passages inédits, trouvant ainsi une variante très

osée à cette voie déjà corsée. Un "risky business" effectué

tout en délicatesse…
