His face reflects the passion he feels for his native land of the Haut-Jura.
Meticulous, focused. Whatever he does, you know Frédéric won’t do
it by halves. In his previous life he was a competitive swimmer then
handball player. Now, the physical body sets his limits: "My days of
pushing the envelope are over." And cross-country skiing is awonderful
source of happiness, allowing him to let off steam, improve technically
and breathe in the vast forest. The Jura – "it’s just great for having fun
in" – also feeds his other passion: fine food and drink. Thismight involve
sharing a Domaine des Cavarodes (an exceptional Jura wine), savoring
a whisky or enjoying a great meal with friends.
In November 2014, Julbo decided to bring production of its prescription
sunglasses in-house, replacing the previous arrangement of outsourcing
to a subcontractor. Frédéric the optician accepted the double assignment
of RX Trem (prescription sunglasses): performing the freeform
surfacing of the lens, which involves point-by-point compensation to
ensure uniform vision, and then the machining to create a perfect fit
in the curved frame. This is not far off being a technical miracle, but in
the Julbo RX Trem lab, it’s an everyday event, making it look simple.
His other role is to manage the order book workload, by nature
unpredictable, and the delivery times of new (and numerous) product
developments. Fortunately, the lab has total freedom in the organization
of its work. A piece of luck that Frédéric attributes to the family genes
of the company. "In a family, you work out how to get on together,
you dialogue without closed doors, without taboos, and you come up
with solutions."
Which doesn’t prevent the demanding and meticulous Frédéric from
"putting pressure on himself". Hismethods for de-stressing fromdaily
life are also his passions: "Emptying my mind so I can fully taste a
fabulous wine. Headlamp skiing in the forest at night – wonderfully
different. So I can just let go of everything. Every moment has to be
lived 100%."

Précis, concentré. Quoi qu’il fasse, on sent que Frédéric le fera à
fond. Nageur puis handballeur en compétition, ça, c’était avant.
Maintenant le physique fixe les limites : « Je ne vais plus chercher
les dernières ressources ». Et le ski nordique prodigue le bonheur de
se dépenser, de progresser techniquement, de respirer l’immense
forêt. Le Jura, « c’est juste génial pour se faire plaisir », alimente
aussi son autre passion : l’épicurisme. Partager un Domaine des
Cavarodes -un Jura exceptionnel-, déguster un whisky, être autour
d’un bon repas entre copains…
En novembre 2014, Julbo décide d’intégrer la production de solaires
à la vue, fabrication jusqu’alors confié à un sous-traitant externe.
Frédéric l’opticien prend en charge la double mission du RX Trem
(solaire à la vue) : réaliser le surfaçage freeform du verre, qui est
une compensation point par point, pour une vision homogène, puis
l’usinage qui assure un montage parfait sur la monture galbée.
Ce n’est pas très loin d’être une petite prouesse, mais au labo
RX Trem Julbo, c’est le quotidien alors ça paraît simple…
Reste à gérer la charge du flux de commande, par nature
imprévisible, et les délais des nouveaux (et nombreux)
développements produits. Heureusement le labo jouit d’une totale
liberté dans l’organisation du travail. Une chance que Frédéric
attribue aux gênes familiaux de l’entreprise. « Dans une famille,
on fait avec les uns et les autres, on dialogue sans porte fermée,
sans tabou, on trouve les solutions »…
Ce qui n’empêche pas Frédéric, exigeant et pointilleux, de se
« mettre la pression ». Ses méthodes pour évacuer les tracas du
quotidien sont aussi ses passions : « Faire le vide pour appréhender
au mieux un vin à déguster. Skier à la frontale dans la forêt
nocturne, si différente. Alors je lâche tout. Chaque moment doit
être vécu à 100 % ».
